I've been hearing that the part about the frequent HTC updates and the bricking if you run out of battery during an update is true. Anyone here have an HTC who can confirm or deny that?
Also; I hear that app compatibility has been a big issue. You never know what will work on your phone, so even though there are 10,000 apps how many actually work on your particular phone?
Again, can anyone confirm or deny that who has an HTC?
I have not had any compatibility issues with my HTC incredible. I have seen some crappy apps, however.
The issues I have seen about Android apps and android phones is that there are a bunch of older model phones that won't get or can't yet get an upgrade to a newer Android OS. The app developers just develop for the latest release and that causes the compatibility issues. Many developers don't think about backward compatibility. Multi-touch is one example. They make the software(app) require multi-touch, but the older phone OS or hardware doesn't support it so the app won't work right or it crashes.
I guess iPhones update their os when they update the phone hardware.
The issue with an update bricking your phone was with one particular early HTC Evo update, I think. They dealt with it right away, though. A bigger problem (or nifty feature depending on your viewpoint) is the ability to have super user access to your phone so you can put on a custom ROM with a later phone OS and whatnot. It adds a bunch of abilities to the phone but some of them weren't meant to be used in that way and a faulty update could crater your phone. It's kinda like updating the bios on your motherboard. If something happens during the upgrade, then boom! your phone is a brick.
