Wow, this desk started out as a very simple idea: Build a small, sparse desk that I could use to house a game PC that has a LCD monitor and a SFF (Small Form Factor) PC. It's not meant to be a main desk. Additionally, I also wanted to experiment with curved shapes a little and thought I'd create some laminated curved pieces. What made this even worse is that I decided, in a moment of delirium, that I wouldn't need a plan. The plan would be so simple that I could just throw together and bam, be done.

Ah, such a naive idea. As I was kicking ideas for this, I consulted (as I normally do) with OMC. He sent me various plans for desks and there were ideas in there that I liked, such as the keyboard drawer you'll see, so I went ahead to incorporate these ideas in mine. This is pretty typical to my whole woodworking approach; going out finding something I want to build and then expanding the design with features I like from other designs. So the simple desk got a little more complicated.

So what's wrong with not doing a design beforehand? Once I had everything assembled, I noticed that the brackets for the drawer slides of the keyboard drawer were exactly where I had predrilled holes for the legs to attach to the desk.... Yay, me! Dealing with these little conflicts made the desk drag out, and I finally got to a point where I wanted to finish and move on. So instead of being the desk I originally envisioned, the desk became "good enough." And actually, it is. I may revisit this to build small curved stands to hook to the legs for the PC to stand on, but we'll see...

The desk is built from solid poplar. You can see in the early pics how I laminated the boards together with pocket screws and glue to make the desktop. Some freehand work with a jigsaw and router got me my curved shapes. And I threw in an element of asian design with the look of the legs (I hope). It is finished with three coats of a gel finish and three coats of blond shellac that I rubbed out to a semi-gloss.

Sounds like I almost know what I'm talking about, don't it?
